The crash occurred around 12:56 a.m. in the northbound lanes in North Castle, said New York State Police Trooper AJ Hicks.
According to Hicks, a driver rear-ended a vehicle, then while trying to move to the shoulder of the road, was reared-ended by a third vehicle.
The person who died was a passenger in the vehicle that was trying to move to the side of the roadway, he said.
No other information was immediately available.
